When a shower pump helps
Shower pumps boost water from a gravity-fed system — the kind with a cold water tank in the loft and a hot water cylinder. The higher the tank sits above the shower, the better the natural pressure; where that height is modest, a pump makes the difference between a dribble and a proper shower.
Pumps are not the answer to every weak shower. Combi boilers and unvented cylinders run at mains pressure and must not have a pump attached to the mains supply. If that is your system, the fix lies elsewhere — our low water pressure guide helps you tell the difference, and we will confirm it when we visit.
Choosing the right pump
The right pump depends on your system, not just your budget. Positive-head pumps suit showers where the tank sits well above the shower head; negative-head pumps are needed where the shower head is level with or above the tank. Twin-impeller pumps boost hot and cold together, which keeps the temperature balanced.
We match the pump's rating to your pipework, cylinder and how many outlets it will serve. An oversized pump on small pipework is noisy and can pull air into the system; an undersized one disappoints. Getting this right is most of the job.
Installed properly, running quietly
A good installation is about the details: the pump sited on a firm, level base with anti-vibration mounting, connected with flexible hoses, and fed from a dedicated flange on the cylinder so it never draws air. Done properly, a modern pump hums along quietly in the airing cupboard for years.
Done badly, you get noise, vibration through the pipework and a pump that wears out early. If your existing pump roars or rattles, the installation is often as much to blame as the pump itself.
Repair or replace?
A pump that has grown noisy, pulses, or cuts in and out may have worn bearings, a sticking pressure switch or air in the system. Some faults are repairable, but on an older pump a replacement is often the better value — modern units run more quietly and efficiently.
We will tell you honestly which situation you are in. And if the pump is fine but the problem is scale in the shower head or a blocked filter, we will say that too — see our shower and tap guidance for the simple checks.
