What a gas engineer does
A gas engineer installs, services and repairs gas appliances and the pipework that feeds them. For most homes, that means boilers: fitting new ones, tracing faults in old ones and carrying out the annual service that keeps them safe and efficient. We also alter and extend gas pipework when a boiler moves or a new appliance is added.
By law, anyone working on gas in your home must be on the Gas Safe Register. Our engineers are registered, and you can ask to see the card on any visit — it lists exactly which types of work the engineer is qualified to do.
Gas boiler work
Most homes around Harpenden heat with mains gas — Census 2021 recorded 84% of households around the town centre as mains-gas heated — so gas boilers are the heart of what we do.
For a new boiler, our boiler installation page explains how we survey, size and fit it. If yours has broken down, boiler repair covers how we find the fault before fitting parts. And boiler servicing explains the annual check that keeps your warranty valid and the boiler burning efficiently.
If you smell gas
Smell gas or suspect a leak? Call the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999 first — it's free and runs around the clock. Open doors and windows, don't touch electrical switches, don't smoke or use naked flames, and turn the gas off at the meter if you can do so safely.
Once the emergency service has made everything safe, that's where we come in: finding and repairing the fault in the appliance or pipework, and getting your heating and hot water running again.
How to check any gas engineer
Before anyone works on gas in your home — us included — check their Gas Safe ID card and look the registration up on the Gas Safe Register website. The back of the card shows the specific work that engineer is qualified for, which matters because not every registered engineer is qualified for every appliance.
Our guide to choosing a Gas Safe engineer goes through the checks step by step.
