Plumbing and heating across the city
St Albans is a cathedral city of around 82,000 people on the old Roman road of Watling Street, and its housing is just as varied as its history. Across the district, Census 2021 recorded roughly 30% of homes as semi-detached, 26% detached, 20% terraced and 23% flats — and around 71% are owner-occupied. That mix means the work ranges from compact flat plumbing to multi-bathroom family houses.
We cover the whole city and its AL1 to AL4 postcodes: the centre and St Peter's Street, Bernards Heath, Marshalswick, Sopwell, Verulam and Batchwood, plus Jersey Farm, Chiswell Green, Park Street, London Colney and Sandridge nearby.
Older homes and conservation areas
The railway arrived in 1858 and much of St Albans' Victorian and Edwardian housing dates from the growth that followed. Several of those estates — Clarence Park, the Marlborough House Estate, Gombards and the Spencer Park Estate among them — are now conservation areas, and the district has 35 in total.
Older houses often still have their original pipework runs, ageing stopcocks and heating systems that have been adapted piecemeal over decades. We're used to working in them carefully. If your project changes anything external, such as a boiler flue or new pipework on a listed or conservation-area property, it's worth checking the requirements with St Albans City and District Council first.
Very hard water in St Albans
St Albans' water comes from Affinity Water and it is very hard — the St Albans North zone measures around 337 mg/l of calcium carbonate. You see it as scale in kettles and on shower heads, but it also builds up inside combi boiler heat exchangers, shower valves and taps, shortening their life.
When we fit a new boiler or bathroom in the city, we'll often suggest a scale reducer or system filter to protect the new equipment. It's a modest addition that pays for itself in a hard-water area like this one.
Gas heating in the district
Census 2021 recorded 81.5% of homes in the St Albans district as heated by mains gas, so gas boilers and central heating are the core of the work we do here. Our Gas Safe registered engineers install, service and repair gas boilers, and we look after LPG and oil systems in the rural edges of the district too.
