What a conversion involves
Taking out a bath and putting a shower in its place sounds simple, but the details decide whether it lasts. The waste position and fall usually need changing, the supply pipework gets altered to suit the new shower, the floor and walls need proper waterproofing, and only then do the tray or former, enclosure and tiling go in.
Because we do the plumbing, waterproofing and tiling ourselves, there's no gap between trades where problems fall through. One team takes the room from old bath to finished shower.
Walk-in and level-access options
The most popular choice is a low-profile tray with a glass screen — easy to step into and simple to keep clean. Where step-free access matters, a level-access former creates a true walk-in wet area with the floor graded to a drain, which suits anyone finding a bath edge difficult.
Our wet room versus shower room guide compares the two approaches, and the bathroom plumbing guide covers the pipework side of the project.
Should you keep a bath somewhere?
Families with young children, and buyers viewing a family home, often expect at least one bath in the house. If yours is the only bathroom, that's worth thinking about before the bath comes out. In a second bathroom or en-suite, a bath-to-shower conversion is usually an easy decision.
We'll talk it through honestly when we visit — including where a shower-over-bath or a smaller bath might be a better answer than losing the bath entirely.
How the work runs
- Visit: we look at the room, the existing pipework and what you want from the space.
- Quote: a clear written price covering everything, before any work is booked.
- Strip out: the bath and old fittings come out and waste is taken away.
- First fix: supply and waste pipework altered for the new shower.
- Waterproofing and tiling: the wet area is tanked, tiled and sealed properly.
- Fit-off: tray or former, screen, shower and controls installed and tested.
While the room is open
A conversion is a good moment to deal with anything else behind the walls or under the floor: tired pipework, a noisy pump, or adding underfloor heating while the floor is up. If the wider room needs more than a conversion, our bathrooms and wet rooms page covers full installations.
Areas we cover
We carry out bath to shower conversions across Harpenden, St Albans, Wheathampstead, Redbourn, Luton and Hemel Hempstead. Our areas we cover page lists the rest.
