What a boiler installation covers
Fitting a new boiler involves far more than hanging a box on the wall. A proper job takes in the flue, the fuel supply, the condensate pipe, the connections to your radiators and hot water, and the controls that decide when everything runs. We take out the old unit, mount and connect the new one, fill and test the system, and leave it behaving the way you expect.
Many of the jobs we do are straight swaps, where an ageing boiler is replaced by a modern one in roughly the same position. Others mean relocating the boiler, changing the type of system or adding a hot water cylinder. Whatever yours involves, we talk you through the work before anything is agreed, so nothing comes as a surprise halfway through.
When it's time for a new boiler
People usually get in touch about a replacement for one of a handful of reasons. The old boiler keeps letting them down and the call-outs are mounting up. Spare parts for an older model are getting hard to track down. The household has grown and the hot water runs out too quickly. Or a renovation is under way and the heating needs to suit the new layout.
Age on its own is not a good enough reason to throw out a boiler that still works well. If yours has one fault that can be put right at a sensible cost, mending it is often the smarter move, and we will say so plainly. Our boiler repair page explains how we weigh that decision. We would rather keep you as a customer for years than sell you something you did not need.
How an installation runs
Everything starts with a look at how your home really uses heat and hot water: how many people live there, how many bathrooms there are, whether two showers are likely to run at once, and how well the building holds its warmth. That tells us what type and output of boiler will suit you. Bigger is not better here. An oversized boiler costs more to buy and wastes fuel heating air you never feel.
- Survey: we visit, look at the existing system and ask how you use it day to day.
- Recommendation: we explain which boiler and system type we think fits, and why.
- Quote: you receive a clear written price before any work is booked in.
- Fitting: the old boiler comes out, the new one goes in, and pipework is tidied and tested.
- Controls: thermostats and programmers are set up so the heating runs when you want it.
- Handover: we show you how to use the boiler and controls and explain what servicing it needs.
Options and materials
We install gas, LPG and oil boilers, so homes away from the mains gas network are looked after too. Our engineers are Gas Safe registered, and work on every fuel type is carried out by qualified engineers.
For most households the big choice is between a combi boiler, which heats water on demand without a tank, and a system boiler paired with a hot water cylinder. That includes unvented cylinders, which supply mains-pressure hot water to several taps at the same time. The right answer depends on how much hot water you draw at once, and our combi boiler installation guide sets out the trade-offs in more depth.
We are Viessmann and Grant installers. On qualifying installations that brings a manufacturer's warranty of up to 10 years, as long as the boiler is looked after as the manufacturer asks, which is where our boiler servicing comes in.
A new boiler does its best work with sensible controls and clean system water. We can add room thermostats, programmers, TRVs and pumps at the same time (see our heating controls guide), and where an older system is clogged with sludge we may suggest a powerflush before the new boiler goes on. If the whole system needs rethinking, read about central heating installation. For what drives the overall price, see the new boiler cost guide; we only quote once we have seen the property.
