Cold at the top of the radiator
If a radiator is warm at the bottom but stubbornly cold across the top few inches, the cause is almost always trapped air sitting in the highest point of the radiator body. Air rises above the water, forms a pocket, and stops that section from filling with hot water. It is one of the most common calls we get from homes in Harpenden and St Albans, particularly after the heating has been off over summer or after any work has been done on the system that lets air in.
The fix is usually straightforward bleeding with a radiator key, released slowly until water runs out with no more hissing. If the same radiator needs bleeding every few weeks, that is not normal and suggests air is continually being drawn into the system, often through an undersized or poorly positioned feed and expansion tank, a faulty automatic air vent, or a pump that is letting air in around its seal.
Cold at the bottom of the radiator
Cold at the bottom, particularly if it feels cold across the whole lower third rather than just a corner, is a classic sign of sludge (magnetite) settling at the base of the radiator. This black, gritty sludge is formed from corrosion inside steel radiators and pipework over years of use, and it accumulates fastest in systems that have never had a chemical flush or that lack a magnetic filter.
Bleeding will not fix this because there is no air involved; the water simply cannot reach and heat that part of the panel. Removing and flushing the individual radiator with a hose, sometimes tipping it to dislodge compacted sludge, can help temporarily, but if several radiators show the same pattern the whole system usually needs a proper power flush and a dose of inhibitor afterwards to slow the corrosion down.
One radiator cold, the rest working fine
When just one radiator in the house refuses to heat up while everything else is fine, the fault is almost always local to that radiator rather than the boiler or pump. Check first that the lockshield valve and the TRV (thermostatic radiator valve) are both open; it is surprisingly common to find a valve closed off from previous work or a house move.
If both valves are open and the radiator is still stone cold, suspect either a badly blocked radiator full of sludge, a seized valve that looks open but is not actually letting water through, or in some cases a closed-off pipe run if the radiator sits at the end of a long branch. A quick way to narrow this down is to feel the pipes going into the radiator; if both are cold, the blockage is at the valve or just inside the radiator itself.
All radiators cold together
If every radiator in the house is cold at the same time but the boiler is firing and hot water still works, the fault usually sits with the pump, a motorised valve, or the central heating programmer or thermostat rather than with the radiators themselves. A pump that has failed or seized will stop hot water circulating around the system entirely, even though the boiler itself is heating water perfectly well.
It is also worth checking the boiler pressure gauge; if pressure has dropped too low, many boilers will lock out the heating circuit as a safety measure while still allowing hot water. Re-pressurising the system via the filling loop, following the boiler manufacturer's instructions, resolves this in many cases. If pressure keeps dropping again over days or weeks, there is a leak somewhere that needs finding.
Seized TRVs and leaking valves
TRVs that are rarely turned down, particularly on radiators in spare rooms or hallways, can seize in one position over time. The pin inside the valve body sticks, and turning the dial has no effect on flow. Gently working the valve, or removing the head and tapping the pin with a small tool while the system is depressurised, will often free it, though a stubborn valve is sometimes best replaced.
Leaking valves, whether at the TRV, the lockshield, or the radiator's bleed point, are usually caused by a worn washer or a loose gland nut rather than a fault with the radiator itself. Small drips can often be tightened by hand, but persistent leaks around a valve body, especially near carpets or floorboards, are worth having looked at promptly to avoid water damage.
Noisy radiators and pipework
Banging or gurgling noises from radiators, sometimes called kettling when it comes from the boiler itself, are usually caused by trapped air, sludge restricting flow, or pipework that is not properly clipped and expands as it heats up. Bleeding and a check of pipe clips will resolve most cases.
If the banging is coming from the boiler rather than the radiators, this can indicate limescale or sludge build-up on the heat exchanger and should not be ignored, since it puts extra strain on the boiler and can shorten its life considerably.

- Why does my radiator need bleeding so often?
- Occasional bleeding after the heating is switched on for the season is normal. If a radiator needs bleeding every few weeks, air is being drawn into the system somewhere, commonly through the feed and expansion tank, an automatic air vent, or a pump seal, and it is worth having this checked rather than just repeating the bleed.
- Can sludge damage my boiler as well as my radiators?
- Yes. Magnetite sludge circulates through the whole system, not just the radiators, and can clog the boiler's heat exchanger and pump, reducing efficiency and increasing the chance of breakdowns. A magnetic filter fitted on the return pipe to the boiler catches much of this before it causes damage.
- Is it safe to bleed a radiator myself?
- Yes, bleeding is a routine homeowner task that only involves the water side of the system. Just take care as the water can be hot, keep a cloth and small container handy, and always re-check the boiler pressure afterwards, topping it up via the filling loop if needed.
- My radiator valve won't turn at all, what should I do?
- Do not force a seized valve heavily as this can snap the spindle and cause a leak that is far harder to deal with. A gentle, steady pressure with an appropriate tool often frees it, but if it will not budge it is best to have it inspected and replaced if necessary.
- Should I get a heating engineer to look, or try to fix it myself?
- Bleeding radiators, checking valves are open, and topping up pressure are all safe DIY jobs. Anything involving opening up the gas boiler, replacing valves under pressure, or repeated pressure loss should be looked at by a qualified engineer. Remember that only Gas Safe registered engineers should work on the gas appliance itself.
