What boiler pressure actually is
Central heating systems are sealed and filled with water under pressure so that it can circulate efficiently around the radiators and back to the boiler. This pressure is shown on a gauge, either analogue or digital, usually located on the front of the boiler, and for most domestic boilers the correct pressure when the system is cold is somewhere between 1 and 1.5 bar, though it is always worth checking your specific boiler's manual as this can vary slightly.
When the heating is running, pressure will naturally rise a little as the water expands with heat, which is entirely normal. It is the pressure reading when the system is cold that matters for checking whether a top-up is needed.
Why pressure drops over time
A very gradual drop in pressure over several months is fairly normal and simply means a tiny amount of air or water has been released from the system over time, for example through bleeding a radiator. Topping up occasionally, perhaps once every few months, is nothing to worry about.
A more rapid or repeated drop in pressure, however, usually points to a genuine leak somewhere in the system. This could be a weeping joint, a faulty valve, a radiator connection, or in some cases a fault within the boiler itself such as a failing pressure relief valve or a cracked heat exchanger. If you find yourself needing to top up every week or more, it is time to have it investigated rather than continuing to top up indefinitely.
How to top up pressure via the filling loop
Most boilers have an external filling loop, a flexible braided hose with valves at each end, connecting the mains cold water supply to the central heating system. To top up, make sure the boiler is switched off and cool, then slowly open both valves on the filling loop, either together or one at a time depending on your specific boiler's instructions, and watch the pressure gauge climb.
Once the gauge reaches the correct level, usually around 1 to 1.5 bar, close both valves fully and disconnect the loop if it is a removable type. Overfilling is easy to do if you are not watching the gauge closely, so it is worth topping up in small stages rather than all at once, particularly if you are doing this for the first time.
If your boiler does not return to normal operation after topping up, or the pressure warning light stays on, it may need a manual reset once the correct pressure has been reached. Check your specific manual for the reset procedure, as this varies between manufacturers.

When high pressure is the problem

High pressure can also be caused by a failed expansion vessel. This is a small tank inside the boiler containing a rubber diaphragm and a cushion of air, designed to absorb the natural expansion of water as it heats up. If the diaphragm fails or the air charge is lost, the vessel can no longer do its job properly, and pressure can climb too high or fluctuate unpredictably. This is a job for a Gas Safe registered engineer to diagnose and, if needed, recharge or replace.
Signs that point to a leak rather than normal pressure loss
If you notice damp patches near radiator valves or pipework, a puddle forming under the boiler, or staining on ceilings below upstairs pipework, these are clear signs of a leak that needs investigating rather than simply topping up the pressure again and again. Left unaddressed, a leak can cause damage to flooring, ceilings and decorating, quite aside from the ongoing pressure problem.
